For over a month, I've played with the Sony ZV-1, creating high-quality vlogs for various social media platforms, such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. I freaking love it. As an avid photographer and videographer, I appreciate this camera's range of manual and automatic settings. The automated options are convenient for beginners, enabling them to get great results quickly. The camera's portability makes it the perfect companion for capturing fun moments with friends and family. Its upgraded sister cam, the ZV-1F, is another great option for those needing a similar use case. Although I've used the ZV-1 more and therefore have more input on its review, I'll dive into each camera and tell the difference for those wanting a detailed comparison. Compared to DSLR cameras, the ZV-1 and ZV-1F are lighter, more affordable, and fit into a pocket or purse. Sony's wireless app makes it easy to transfer footage directly to your phone for quick editing and posting to TikTok or Instagram. Both cameras offer the best quality possible, whether you prefer to edit on a computer or straight from your phone. But which is better for you?

The Sony ZV-1 Camera

The Sony ZV-1 is an excellent camera for those looking for high-quality footage in a small package. The Video Mode is impressive, with 4K Ultra HD and S-log recording available at 24 fps. Its sound recording and autofocus features also make it a great choice, ensuring the audio will appear evident and audible. The ZV-1 is especially useful when shooting in public spaces or with friends; it's not invasive or too loud for awkward recording.

Additionally, its small size makes it easy to store in my bag, eliminating the need to lug around a bulky DSLR. With this camera, I can capture every moment without missing a beat.

The Sony ZV-1 is the perfect camera for my small personal projects, such as documenting a day with friends and family or daily vlogging. I recently shot my week-long trip in London with good pals; it fits in my fanny pack for portable transportation, and its battery lasted for our long nights on the town. Plus, it's just so easy. Truly as seamless as my phone but with visibly better quality.

Overall, I am delighted with the performance of this bad boy. I'm stoked to use it more often in my future travels and hang with pals on the weekends.

The Sony ZV-1F Camera

The ZV-1F boasts 4K video and a wide field of view, allowing you to get yourself in frame quickly. The impressive eye autofocus guarantees that you're always focused, while the flip screen makes it easy to check your framing. This feature also makes it easier to see me than mounting my iPhone to a tripod for its higher-quality back camera. Additionally, if you need to mount the camera on a tripod, you can do so quickly. Still, the built-in stabilization makes it possible to shoot handheld without sacrificing image quality.

The Sony ZV-1F offers a range of creative looks that can be accessed directly in the camera, eliminating the need for post-editing. Further, the camera features a skin-softening feature designed to create a more flattering image. I don't use these features, but it proves how similar it is to an iPhone for social platforms.

Finally – the fixed lens! We hear tons of creators and enjoy its consistent image quality for every clip and how easy it is to achieve the scene in every frame with the 23mm focal length. Its fixed lens also helps to keep the camera lightweight and portable; the camera does not have to maintain the additional weight of interchangeable lenses, ensuring a more straightforward carrying solution.

Plus, come on! It's only $499 at the current market value; you cannot beat that price.

How I Edit Vlogs & Short Form

Short-form edits have never been easier.

The Sony ZV-1 is flexible and versatile for every editing process. Many creators prefer to edit on their phone or in the app of their choice, but I like the computer with higher-performing editing software.

I can quickly organize my footage for various projects, making quick vlogs and video diaries a breeze in Davinci Resolve. The camera also permits me to color-correct my footage to fit whatever project I'm working on, curating a distinctive vibe for each video.

The benefit of shooting in 4K Ultra HD is that I can crop images horizontally or vertically without losing any resolution. Once satisfied with the results, I can airdrop the project to my phone and upload it to various social media platforms or YouTube from my desktop. With the ZV-1, I can quickly create and upload a project in just a few hours.

The most convenient feature of the camera is its automatic conversion of vertical footage. If you're shooting the camera vertically, you don't have to convert each clip in Davinci, as the camera's software does so without manual operation, making the editing much more effortless.

Editing on the computer late at night is so cathartic; I draw more profound inspiration in the editing room with headphones, light background music, and a tasty beverage.

Editing vlogs and short form on my large iMac is way more fun as a night owl.

The Differences | Sony ZV-1 vs. ZV-1F

The Sony ZV-1F is an upgraded version of the original Sony ZV-1. The central differences between the two cameras are that the ZV-1F has an improved autofocus system, a more extensive and higher-resolution LCD touchscreen, and an updated shutter mechanism.

The ZV-1F's autofocus system is more accurate and faster than the ZV-1's. It also utilizes Eye AF technology, detecting faces and eyes and automatically focusing on them. The high-quality performances make capturing sharp images of people or animals easier. The ZV-1F's LCD touchscreen is larger and has more resolution than the ZV-1's, ensuring more straightforward setting adjustments while shooting. Finally, the ZV-1F's shutter mechanism has been redesigned for faster response times and smoother operation, allowing for quick, precise shutter speeds when taking photos.

However, it's essential to note that photography isn't the strongest suit for either camera body. For total transparency, I see more robust photography performance from my iPhone 15 Pro. I recommend a ZV-series camera with your everyday smartphone strictly for higher-quality video documentation.

I cannot advise the ZV-1 enough for short-form content, as it has dramatically expanded my workflow and made personal vlogs much more enjoyable to shoot. It's almost reminiscent of a '90s camcorder, except you don't have the robust cassettes to convert.

Again, I've used the ZV-1 more often than the ZV-1F. Still, I researched various opinions from fellow creators and streamers we've worked with, like Tiana, on a recent campaign to gain their insight and honest thoughts. They love it too.

Overall, these cameras are perfect for those looking for a reliable, flexible, cost-effective way to create content. Not so much for photography, but its automated settings are ideal for those needing buttery vlog footage for YouTube Shorts, TikToks, Instagram Reels, Vlogs, or home movies to make with family or friends. Bust it out — and you're ready to record.
